چکیده

Adjectival modification, particularly by expressions that have been treated as higherorder modifiers in the formal semantics tradition, raises interesting challenges for semantic composition in distributional semantic models. We contrast three types of adjectival modifiers – intersectively used color terms (as in white towel, clearly first-order), subsectively used color terms (white wine, which have been modeled as both firstand higher-order), and intensional adjectives (former bassist, clearly higher-order) – and test the ability of different composition strategies to model their behavior. In addition to opening up a new empirical domain for research on distributional semantics, our observations concerning the attested vectors for the different types of adjectives, the nouns they modify, and the resulting noun phrases yield insights into modification that have been little evident in the formal semantics literature to date.

Distributional semantic phrases vs. semantic distributional nonsense: Adjective modification in compositional distributional semantics

In this talk, I discuss the ability of compositional distributional semantics to model adjective modification. I present three studies that explore the degree to which semantic intuitions are grounded in the distributional representations of adjective-noun phrases, as well as provide insight into various linguistic phenomena by extracting unsupervised cues from these distributional representati...

Studying the Recursive Behaviour of Adjectival Modification with Compositional Distributional Semantics

In this study, we propose an approach to determine restrictions in adjective ordering through the use of compositional methods in distributional semantics. Specifically, we focus on being able to automatically distinguish phrases in which there is flexibility in the adjective ordering from those bound to a rigid order. We explore a number of measures extracted from the distributional representa...

Dead parrots make bad pets: Exploring modifier effects in noun phrases

Sometimes modifiers have a strong effect on core aspects of the meaning of the nouns they are attached to: A parrot is a desirable pet, but a dead parrot is, at the very least, a rather unusual household companion. In order to stimulate computational research into the impact of modification on phrase meaning, we collected and made available a large dataset containing subject ratings for a varie...

1 Bayesian Logic Programming : Theory and Tool

In recent years, there has been a significant interest in integrating probability theory with first order logic and relational representations [see De Raedt and Kersting, 2003, for an overview]. Muggleton [1996] and Cussens [1999] have upgraded stochastic grammars towards Stochastic Logic Programs, Sato and Kameya [2001] have introduced Probabilistic Distributional Semantics for logic programs,...

Distributional Learning of Regular Formal Graph System of Bounded Degree

In this paper, we describe how distributional learning techniques can be applied to formal graph system (FGS) languages. Formal graph system is a logic program that deals with term graphs instead of the terms of first-order predicate logic. We show that the FGS languages of bounded degree with the 1-finite context property (1-FCP) and the bounded treewidth property can be learned from positive ...
